Introductions to grooming is recommended to take place following your pups second vaccinations, this is usually between 10 to 12 weeks old. This is recommended for all coat types, should your dog require grooming, even nail trims if you choose to bath them at home, this could lead to stressful experiences when your puppy has transitioned into adulthood.
At The Dog Spa, the aim is to make grooming an enjoyable experience as possible for your dog.
We believe it is best that your new puppy has two or three shorter puppy grooming sessions before experiencing a full-service groom. Full grooms usually take place around 6 months old. If your dog has a double coat and is trimmed too early, this could lead to it not growing back the same.
Session 1 – Play and treats (approx. 30 minutes)
Your puppy will be introduced to the noises and smells of a dog grooming salon, have cuddles, a play and some treats. Also, your dog will have treats whilst having a positive introduction to sounds and feels of scissors and clippers.
Session 2 – Play and trim (45 minutes to 1 hour)
Your dog will receive a nail clip, trim pads and sanitary trim and face trim depending on breed.
Session 3 – Bath & trim (1 hour to 1½ hours)
This would be a slow introduction to the bathing process. At a slow pace, a shampoo, dry and a trim if required.
Session 4 – Full Groom (2 hours)
At a slow pace your puppy will receive a full groom. Your puppy should then be ready to take on regular grooming schedule of between 6-10 weeks depending on breed and coat type.
